Reading the News in Korean

Who this course is for

  • Upper-intermediate and advanced learners.
  • TOPIK II learners aiming for Levels 5 and 6.
  • Anyone who opens a Korean news site, reads two lines and closes it again.

About this course

Korean news is written in its own register. The headlines drop particles and verb endings, the sentences are long, the vocabulary is formal, and the reporting verbs carry meaning that a dictionary does not explain well. That is why learners who handle textbook Korean comfortably can still stall on a news article.

This course teaches the register directly. It opens with a news grammar bootcamp covering the written forms, the reporting structures and the headline grammar that makes shortened headlines readable. Once you can decode a headline, you can decide whether an article is worth your time before you start it.

At the centre of the course is a five-step method for reading any article: what to do before you read, how to use the headline and the first paragraph, how to handle unknown vocabulary without stopping, how to check that you understood, and what to take away. The method is the same every time, so you can use it on any article you find after the course ends.

The readings are graded by TOPIK level, which is what makes the course usable rather than discouraging. Level 3 readings cover daily-life news. Level 4 moves into society and everyday economy. Level 5 covers economy, policy and science. Level 6 covers opinion pieces and in-depth articles. You start where you are and climb, and you can see the climb happening.

Every reading comes with its own vocabulary bank, so the words you need arrive with the article instead of as a separate list.

A broadcast and digital section compares print Korean with broadcast Korean, adds a shadowing lab where you read along with a script, covers reading news on Korean portal sites, and connects all of it to the TOPIK listening paper, where news-style audio appears in the later questions. The course ends with a skills and final project section.
